ACC to quiz Gayoom over graft probe, denies summon

Maldives' Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday denied summoning deposed ruling party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom but said investigating officers would question the former president over an ongoing corruption probe.

ACC chief Hassan Luthfee denied media reports indicating that the former strongman had been officially summoned, insisting that ACC officers would instead be sent to question Gayoom over possible misuse of state funds from the presidential palace during the last year's of his presidency.

"We have a few things we need to clarify so we sent a letter. We haven't summoned him for questioning. We will send officials where president Gayoom is," Luthfee explained.

Gayoom's lawmaker son Faris Maumoon had also been questioned by the ACC over the 2008 audit report which had flagged the misused funds.
