Maldives govt says no 'plastic egg' imports

Government on Thursday refuted recent reports of plastic or artificial egg imports into the archipelago.

Economic ministry had denied the claims after unconfirmed reports that fake eggs had been imported into the Maldives had circulated in social media with some local media outlets carrying the rumours.

Maldives Food and Drug Authority (FDA) had launched a probe into the rumours and reported to the ministry, confirming that no fake eggs had been imported into the Maldives. Ministry had expressed concern in the rapid spreading of the rumour, advising the public to stop circulating such misleading content on social media,

Fake eggs feared to be made of plastic have caused panic in India after they were recovered in large numbers from markets in some states of the neighbouring country. India remains a key exporter of eggs to the Maldives

Health ministry insisted that no international authority including the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an alert over the reports.

Experts have opined that making fake eggs using chemicals may not be a big deal as calcium Carbonate, Gypsum and Sodium Alginate can be used to manufacture fake eggs.

However, dangerous chemicals such as Benzoic Acid and Mercury may be used to make the yolk which can affect your liver, even cause cancer.
