Three injured after speedboat catches fire

A speedboat docked in the northern harbour of capital Male caught fire late Sunday afternoon leaving three crew members injured.

Firefighters had rushed to the scene and put out the fire not long after.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) spokesperson Captain Ibrahim Azim said the fire was reported around 2:15pm and firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Details of the incident or the injured remain unclear.

Avas understands that there were three people on board when the speedboat caught fire and jumped overboard. Two had been taken to hospital after having suffered varying degrees of burn injuries.

The Sunland Resort speedboat had transferred tourists to Male just before the incident. The speedboat had been badly damaged in the fire.

Firefighters together with the police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
