Ruling party crisis deepens as another MP quits

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s crisis continues to deepen as another lawmaker quit the party on Friday. Hanimaadhoo MP Shahudhee has sent a letter to PPM secretary general Abdulla Haleel expressing his wish to leave the party.

The Hanimaadhoo MP had stated in his letter that he has no desire to work with any party at present and requested for the removal of his name from PPM’s registry.

MP Shahudhee was among the ten PPM’s lawmakers to sign the opposition coalition’s censure motion to unseat the speaker.

Speaking to Avas in an interview, Shahudhee verified on the authenticity of the letter and said that he will continue to work on bringing amendments with the majority of the parliament.

PPM, meanwhile, has not commented on the matter.

Shahudhee joined PPM on January 2016, after resigning from Jumhoory Party (JP).

MP Shahudhee’s decision comes days after he along with nine government lawmakers signed an opposition led censure motion to unseat the parliament speaker.

Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, among the government’s lawmakers to sign the censure motion, had also left the ruling party on Tuesday.

After the now opposition coalition in March had filed a second motion to unseat speaker Abdulla Maseeh, the government had engineered an amendment to the parliament rules of procedure raising the number of lawmaker signatures required to file a censure motion against the speaker and his deputy from 15 to 42.

The opposition had filed the third censure motion against Maseeh with 45 lawmakers which included nine lawmakers from the ruling party.
