No action over jailed ex-VP's cell photo leak, police say

Police on Wednesday, stated that no action had been taken against any officer over the picture leaked to social media showing former vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor in his Dhoonidhoo prison cell.

Police said no action had been taken against any custodial officers as the probe into the leak was still ongoing.

The picture was leaked to social media in the wake of the government’s refusal to grant medical leave for the former VP.

Adheeb’s family had requested authorities to grant permission for Adheeb to travel abroad for medical treatment, claiming that he has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones and a dangerous eye disease “glaucoma”.

Adheeb is serving 33 years in prison over two counts of terrorism and corruption including the blast aboard the presidential speedboat which has been now confirmed as a plot to assassinate president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Adheeb meanwhile is facing multiple counts of terrorism and graft charges including a second assassination plot involving a Sri Lankan sniper.
