Special program for Lhaviyani atoll elderly

Gender and family ministry conducted a special program for the elderly in all the islands of Lhaviyani atoll under their ‘Ranveyla’ campaign.

Gender ministry, in joint efforts with the hospitals and health centres in Lhaviyani atoll, carried out a health screening for the elderly in all islands of the atoll. The health screening was done for a total of 178 people aged 65 and above. The elderly were screened for blood pressure and diabetes. The screening also included calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI).

The ministry had also conducted a workshop for the 19 health care workers and social workers in the atoll on the 14th and 15th of July.

The program aims to ensure the good physical and mental health of the elderly and encourage their involvement in the society. Ministry also reported that over 120 elderly participated in the health awareness sessions carried out during the program. Sessions were also held to improve the relationship between the youth and the elderly, with emphasis on the youth to assist the elderly.

Ranveyla was first launched in August of 2016 by the gender and family ministry. The campaign has been carried out in all the islands of Meemu atoll and Baa atoll up to date.
