Maldives leases two islands to NIMS hospital

Noorul Islam Institute of Medical Science and Research Foundation, also known as NIMS/ NIMS medicity, is located in the capital Thiruvanthapuram of Kerala, has stated that the group will be establishing a professional education sector in the Maldives.

According to an Indian news outlet, the government of Maldives handed over a 70-bed hospital with 377 staff in Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhufushi along with exclusive rights to two uninhabited islands for a lease period of 50 years.

Citing NIMS group managing director Faizal Khan, the news outlet reported the estimated total cost of the project to be around 16.5 billion rupees.

Group managing director stated that the group plans to set up a medical education centre, a genetic research centre, an aviation academy, marine engineering college and a holistic treatment centre in the Maldives.

Khan further said that the government had given the group the right to use the uninhabited islands to obtain land mortgage loans. He commented that the medical education sector will be set up in the second phase of development, by the end of next year.

“We are investing 600 million rupees to beef up facilities in the hospital and orders have already been made for a cath lab and other medical equipment” said Khan.

The group will also set up the first Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO) with the help of retired scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation who are already associating with the group.

NIMS Hospital is the first initiative in healthcare by the 57-year-old Noorul Islam Educational trust. It was first established in the year 2005. Apart from the specialty hospital, Noorul Islam Educational trust has also established Noorul Islam College of Dental Science, Noorul Islam College of Nursing and Noorul Islam University.
