Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) on Tuesday, met with police to express concern over the recent spike in violent crimes that obstruct to the people’s right to life, liberty and security.
HRCM stated that discussions of the meeting included efforts to ensure security to the people and prevent such crimes.
After meeting with the police, the rights watchdog had assured that the people will not be deprived of their right to life, liberty and security in accordance with Article 21 of the Constitution.
In the past week, five people had been stabbed with two fatalities as public lambasted the police and the home minister for its inability to curb the violence.
Fear has spread across the capital city as gang violence spate continues. After a period of relative calm, Maldives has seen two deaths, with total of nine stabbings and three assaults in gang violence over the past month. Police have increased patrols around the city in the wake of recent spikes in gang violence and organised crime.
