JP leader Gasim again hospitalised

Ailing Jumhoory Party (JP) leader and Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim was admitted in ADK hospital again on Sunday.

Gasim was previously admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), hours after the government refused to allow the business magnate to travel to Singapore for medical care.

The business magnate had been released from hospital late last month after being treated for a lung condition. Despite repeated requests, authorities had refused to lift Gasim's travel ban who is on trial over three separate charges which include, conspiring to overthrow the government, attempting to bribe government lawmakers ahead of the censure motion against parliament speaker Abdullah Maseeh in late March, and undue influence on a state official.

Gasim's legal team, in a statement on Sunday, said their client had a long-term lungs and heart condition which had worsened while in police custody.

But the statement citing doctors said the Maamigili lawmaker now requires immediate surgery which was not available in the Maldives.

The lawyers also warned that any delay in undergoing surgery would risk the life of their client urging the court to allow Gasim to travel.

The statement also noted that Gasim is deprived of his constitutional rights and the right to life, liberty and security under the Constitution and called on to the system to respect his constitutional rights and urgred the rights watchdog and Prosecutor General’s (PG) office to probe into the matter.
