Stabbed cop to undergo lung surgery

Police on Sunday, stated that Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is preparing to perform lung surgery on stabbed police constable Ali Razzan.

Police said that doctors had recommended a second surgery after additional injuries were discovered.

The police constable was stabbed after he tried to stop contraband being smuggled into the main prison in Maafushi island early Saturday.

Police said the primary suspect, 31 year old Azhar Ibrahim had arrived on a speedboat in Maafushi island around 1am on Saturday but had jumped overboard to try and swim to the shore.

The police officer had jumped in to stop the suspect but was stabbed during a struggle, police had said.

Police said Azhar had an extensive criminal record and has been remanded until his sentence by the criminal court later Saturday.

Police had arrested three further suspects in connection to the case including a minor. However, the juvenile court had refused to extend the minor's remand and has since been released.
