Nasheed's new year aim: Pick a single candidate to win pres polls

Self exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday said his new year resolution was for the now united opposition to decide on a candidate who can defeat incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in next year's presidential elections.

Nasheed along with arch nemesis former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim and religiously conservative Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla had united against president Yameen to "restore democracy".

But the alliance appears to be at odds over picking a presidential candidate with the quartet ruled out over the presidential age cap or a criminal sentence.

However, the alliance has denied reports a rift and has taken a major stride towards the elections after each of its leaders nominated representatives for the single candidate talks.

Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had announced that a candidate would be named by May next year.

Nasheed who lives in exile in the UK after he was jailed on terrorism charges, said on Twitter that his "sole aim for the new year was to nominate a single candidate, defeat president Yameen and win Maldives back for its people."
