MDP laden with corruption in health sector; Health Min

Current health minister Abdullah Nazim has accused former ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) for misusing state wealth under the pretext of purchasing pharmaceuticals for the citizens, with its proof strongly reflecting on documents.

Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday to highlight the achievements of 2017 in health sector, Nazim praised the incumbent president Abdulla Yameen for his successful initiatives in directing a 're-birth' of the frail health sector which was a result of corruption and misconduct under Nasheed's MDP administration.

"Heaps of money were taken as taxes from the citizens under the pretext of purchasing pharmaceuticals for the health sector, but without a legitimate transaction. Even today we have evident records of these transactions as proof and government institutes need to probe into this case," Nazim said.

Nazim had severely criticized the former MDP regime for failing to develop the weak and inefficient medical centers and buildings across several atolls, stating this was a clear act of corruption.

The current health minister had also explained that more than MVR 9 million was expended in order to purchase adequate computer and IT systems for these medical outlets in order to operate them effectively.

"When president Yameen took over the office, the main government hospital lack an MRI machine while a private hospital had the facility. But under Yameen's administration, the government hospital has seen vivid upgrades and adjustments with the installation of an MRI machine being one of the notable pushes," Nazim added.

Nazim had also detailed that several of the state funds were used in order to purchase machinery and vehicles for various hospitals and health centers in Maldives.
