India issues travel advisory to Maldives

The Indian government on Monday advised Indians to refrain unnecessary travel to the neighboring tourist-resort nation Maldives.

The announcement from India's External Ministry advised Indian citizens to avoid traveling to the capital Male and other islands until further notice. The South Asian giant had also advised its people residing in Maldives to take precautionary steps for ensuring safety and avoid attending to public gatherings and assemblies.

Additionally the External Ministry's statement read of grave concern regarding the intense political upheaval and the flailing situation of the country's state.

India's travel advisory comes moments after the president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared a state of emergency with as many as 20 constitutional and judicature laws suspended including the Criminal Procedure Act.

The Maldives legal affairs minister Azima Shukoor read out the declaration which would extend to a 15-day duration.

Legal expert and former Attorney General Husnu Suood claimed the state of emergency cannot be declared with the nullification of judiciary conduct in a country - and added it was a direct violation of Maldives Constitution.

Furthermore Suood added that such conduct could transition the Maldivian state into military rule.
