EU ambassador meets with Maldives Foreign Min

European Union ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives Tung-Lai Margue has met with local Foreign Minister Mohamed Asim on Monday afternoon.

Both executives have met in order to discuss the ongoing political strife and deliberated on methods to avert the situation constructively. Margue and Asim had both, stressed on the healthy relationship between the union of Maldives state.

Foreign Minister assured to the EU ambassador of Maldives' prioritization of the global organization, adding the union was a sought after entity.

In addition to this Asim reiterated the government's continued efforts of sustaining a constitutional state in Maldives.

The Maldives has been thrown into new woes as the Supreme Court ordered release order on nine political dissidents was shunned by the government resulting in a head-butting of president Yameen's administration against the top-court.

After continued debacle from president Yameen to convince top-court to rescind its orders, a state of emergency was declared stretching for 15-days locking-down more than 20 constitutional rights and several judicature rights, including the Criminal Procedure Act.

This granted the government with uncontested authority to move against the top-court and thereby acted as such by dispatching military to Supreme Court premises moments after the declaration.

Both Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and top-court judge Ali Hameed were arrested, who are both currently being pressed charges of accepting bribe and attempting to overthrow a constitutional government.

Following the abrupt arrest of Chief Justice and top-court judge, a senior EU delegate visited Maldives to hold peaceful discussions with members of the government in order assess and counter the ongoing political unrest in Maldives.

However the delegate which included along with EU ambassadors, ambassadors from UK and German, flew back after failing to rendezvous with top-government officials after expressing their concern to the local media.
