Maldives government owned State Trading Organization (STO) on Tuesday refuted reports that the archipelago was headed towards a severe food shortage in the near future.
"We would like to ressure the Maldivian people that God willing there will not be a shortage of these items [fuel, medicine and staple food]. We always maintain the required stock of these items. We also have our distributors in the Atolls. We always pharmacies in every island. So our distribution would also continue," STO managing director Ahmed Shaheer assured.
Amid the ongoing political crisis in the country, opposition has claimed that Maldives would be hit with a severe food shortage in one month. STO however, refuted the claims insisting that they were baseless.
STO group, with its subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates, is a national leader in business. It has significant and focused interests in petroleum, cooking gas, construction materials (including cement and roofing material), medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, home appliances, electronics, supermarket products and insurance.
