Maldives police late Thursday alleged that the now united opposition was planning to undermine the peace and security of the country through acts of violence.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan during an impromptu press briefing said the opposition was plotting arson attacks and clashes with the security forces.
Shifan said the three top opposition officials arrested from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) office in the capital Male earlier Thursday have been accused of plotting attacks in a bid to undermine the peace and stability of the country.
He further warned that the police along with the military would not allow anyone to subvert rule of law and vowed to protect the country and its people.
The island nation has been embroiled in fresh political turmoil after the Supreme Court on February 1 ordered the immediate release of jailed political leaders including Nasheed.
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on February 5 had declared a 15 day state of emergency after his last ditch attempt to convince the top court to revoke the order failed, purged the Supreme Court by arresting two judges and the remaining political leaders and ultimately had the order revoked.
After the original state of emergency expired, president Yameen had got the parliament contentiously extend it by another 30 days.
