Maldives' electoral watchdog rules out e-voting in pres polls

Maldives' electoral watchdog on Monday finally ruled out the possibility of introducing electronic voting for the upcoming presidential elections slated for later this year.

During the first sitting of the newly introduced 'coffee with media', elections commission chief Ahmed Shareef Adam said there was no time to introduce electronic voting for the elections insisting that the presidential elections would see "normal voting and normal counting."

"There's no hope of introducing electronic voting this year. We are largely looking at going for normal voting and normal counting," the recently appointed elections chief Shareef told local reporters.

Shareef pointed out that major amendments to the elections laws were needed to introduce electronic voting to the archipelago.

Elections Commission had earlier announced plans to propose several amendments to the elections Act shared with the Attorney General's (AG) office but Shareef on Monday assured that no amendments had been proposed to facilitate e-voting.
