EC-parties elections discussion pushed back

Election Commission had pushed back its earlier planned discussion with Maldives political parties regarding upcoming elections from Thursday to an undisclosed date of next week.

Earlier on Wednesday the local electoral watchdog had confirmed they were set to meet with all registered and functioning political parties to discuss the commission's preparation and progress of work related to the upcoming presidential elections.

The commission was also set to discuss the planned proceedings of 2018's elections as well as detail out the steps ensured by the body in regulating and monitoring political parties during campaign and election dates.

EC confirmed they would meet with four representatives from each political party - two from policy level and two from parliamentary group of each party - on Thursday at 10:00hrs.

Speaking with Avas Online, the commission's member Ahmed Akram had confirmed EC had postponed the meeting to next week in order to gain extra time to prepare for the discussion and gather relevant documents and talking points for a more constructive panel discussion.

Akram noted that the commission hopes full support and cooperation from all political parties in the discussion similar to previous elections.

EC had on Wednesday confirmed they will announce the full voters' registry on May while they would open for re-registration and complaint lodging in June. Additionally the electoral watchdog confirmed they are expecting to hold the presidential election on late September or in October.
