Public advised to renew national ID prior to elections

Maldives Department of National Registration (DNR) has advised the public to renew their national identity cards - if they are already expired or would expire before the upcoming presidential election.

In a public announcement made by the authority on Sunday, it had requested the public to refrain from renewing their national ID cards in the last minute adding that such a situation would hinder administrative works of the entity. DNR also added that surmounting renewals could mean that many would have to wait longer to receive their renewed cards than usual.

The government authority had also advised pilgrims to renew their national ID cards before it expires as many are expected to leave for Umrah in the month of Ramadan - which would start in the middle of the month of May.

Meanwhile Elections Commission is preparing to launch the presidential election in either late September or early October; and the entity had already started its preliminary works prior to election.

The Maldives electoral watchdog is set to announce a full voters' registry on May while they would open for complaints lodging in June.
