EC refuses two new political party entrants

Maldives Election Commission has refused to accept the entries to two new political party requests.

Recently the Maldives electoral watchdog had clarified it had refused to register one out of the two political party requests over several short shortcomings. However in a tweet by the commission's official handle, it had confirmed both party requests have been declined with accordance to local political party regulations and act.

In a detailing statement the commission had claimed the request to form "The Great Green Connection" was declined since its membership requirement failed to meet mandated regulation. The political party act states that members signing up for a new political party should not be registered members of another existing political party.

Moreover the criminal record documentation of the party leadership and members were not presented to the commission accordingly as well.

The second political party entrant was dismissed over its name sharing similarities to an already existing political party. "Maldivian Republican Party" is similar to the name referred to Jumhoory Party in English; which is translated to "Republic/Republican Party."

The request for this entrant was declined to avoid confusion of similar party names in the local politics.

The two new entrants came at a time when the presidency election is roughly five months away; Election Commission aims to launch the polls by late September or early October.
