Maldives parliament sittings to resume next week

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) senior has claimed parliament sittings will resume next week after an unexpected period of 'recess.'

Though the party member had confirmed parliament sittings were resuming once again, they had not disclosed the agenda or any expected bills for debate. The last parliament session took place more than a month back in March 14, which was regarding the election of members to Maldives Broadcasting Commission.

According to the constitution and mandated parliament regulations sittings must be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays every week excluding official recess.

The static proceedings of local parliament has led to harsh criticism from public and several other entities, while opposition had also maintained their stance throughout the new term's sessions.

Members of the opposition refuse to attend any parliament sitting stating they do not accept its Speaker Abdulla Maseeh to be legitimate. Moreover they had boycotted several ruling party initiated bills and respective sittings.

Meanwhile PPM's parliamentary group leader and Vilimale' MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik assured the unexpected recess in parliament was not due to lack of work, but the parliament as well as the ruling party requires support and assistance of the opposition members in analyzing and debating on the pending bills.
