Ex-Pres Nasheed confirms MDP primary participation

Former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has claimed he will be participating in the Maldives Democratic Party's (MDP) primary to nominate a succeeding coalition backed opposition candidate for 2018 presidential election.

In a tweet on Sunday morning the self-exiled former head of state claimed that the single-candidate representing multiple opposition parties of the coalition will be elected through individual party primaries. He added that he will be participating in the prime opposition party's primary and announced his campaign manager in Mohamed Aslam, the parliament member of north-Hithadhoo constituency.

Though Nasheed is adamant in running for presidency through his apparent confirmation of primary participation Maldives government and ruling party had clearly denied possibilities for the ex-president to run for the top-office.

Maldives government as well as the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has on multiple accounts stressed Mohamed Nasheed will not be legitimately identified as a viable presidential candidate.

On Saturday however, Nasheed challenged the Maldives government's authority and ruling party's claims stating that he would receive the option to place his name in ballots in the last minute. He made the affirmation during his speech at The Capital Maharaja Organization's (TCMOL) annual ceremony.
