Gayoom's health worsens, claims family

Former president of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's health condition has been seriously deteriorating according to his family.

The former head of the state is currently behind bars at Dhoonidhoo penitentiary for his alleged involvement in a coup plot against the government; he is being prosecuted by the state for the act of terrorism.

Gayoom's daughter Yumna Maumoon had tweeted on behalf of her mother and former first lady Nasreena Ibrahim. On Wednesday family visiting hour Nasreena met with her husband, Gayoom and claimed his condition has been worsening.

Following Nasreena Ibrahim's affirmation regarding Gayoom's health the former president's family and his supporters had expressed their concern through various social platforms.

The news of his worsening health condition has come at a time when Gayoom had urged at the court about the possibility of an imminent health threat to his life.

Gayoom had repeatedly requested from the overseeing judge of his case to transfer him to house arrest with regards to his health. However his request was denied by judge posted to his case on context of finding no grounds to review arrest.

Gayoom's wife, Nasreena had sent a letter to the current president of Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Aminath Enas expressing concern due to apparent negligence on the commission's end to facilitate the former president's transfer to house-arrest until his trials conclude, which was requested previously by Gayoom's family.

Moments after president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared state of emergency on February 5 authorities were dispatched to arrest his half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Apart from terrorism charges, the former president is also pressed with the attempt of obstructing judicial conduct.
