An explosion in the kitchen of a local restaurant on Saturday morning in the capital Male has left three people injured.
The ground and first floor of the 10 storey building in Henveiru ward where the Shell Beans bakery and cafe are housed were damaged in the explosion that occurred just after sunrise.
Two expatriates and one local were injured in the incident and are being treated at the privately-run ADK hospital. Firefighters said 30 percent of the body of one of the expats had suffered burn injuries.
According to sources, one of the injured had been in the neighbouring building and had been hurt by a shard of glass after the explosion shattered the window.
Firefighters believe that the explosion occurred after a cooking gas pipe exploded but said the investigation into the incident was underway.
