Convicts join worker ranks to construct bridge-attached roads

Convicts under Maldives Correctional Service's supervision serving time at local penitentiaries have been added to the worker-ranks for the ring road development project.

Marking the first ever in Maldives history where convicts are actively signed up by recognized entity for labor, outside of their held penitentiaries. The prisoners are included in the labor-force responsible for developing the asphalt-laden roads linking to the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge from the capital city's end.

A Correctional Service media official while speaking to Avas Online, claimed of a special program to train prisoners in dealing life skills.

According to the officer they aim to train these convicts to become socially acceptable individuals; ready to be accepted back to society as regular citizens.

Roughly 20 of the convicts serving time in jails have been 'released' exclusively to work in the project under strict Correctional Service supervision. Officers are constantly monitoring and present at the site of work, assessing the movements of the convicts and their work behavior.

The ring road project will see the outer road running around the capital city getting part of it transitioned into a wider 4 lane road. Stretching from the point where King Salman mosque is developed; standing opposite Ooredoo Club-Premier, reaching south and all the way to the west end through the southern end of Male'.

Preliminary to laying asphalt on the roads that will eventually link to the bridge opening from Male' end, Housing Ministry is currently placing a drainage system beneath the roads as well as extended the road width pushing the pavement area from east-side Artificial Beach a little further out.

Housing Ministry ensures the ring road project will conclude before the China Maldives Friendship Bridge finishes in August.
