Explosion in oil vessel leaves crew member with severe burns

A generator explosion in an oil vessel docked at Raa atoll Ungoofaaru has left one of its crew members with severe burns.

According to Ungoofaaru council president Abduh-Naasir the generator exploded due to overheating as the injured crew had attempted to shut it down.

"I am informed that the crew member was attempting to shut down the generator as it overheated. But it [generator] had exploded before it was shut down and injured the crew member severely. He is getting treated at the island's hospital now," Naasir commented.

The injured crew member has been identified as a Sri Lankan national. Photos indicate he received burns on his leg and arm.

Authorities have since cordoned off the vicinity where the vessel is docked and confirmed they are investigating the incident thoroughly.

Maldives National Defense Force's (MNDF) media official Captain Ibrahim Azim confirmed the fire was doused by the other crew members of the vessel with the aid of fire extinguishers.
