Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF); specifically its Coastguard unit has assisted a local who fell victim to decompression sickness (deco) while attempting to dive to catch fishing bait.
The victim belonged to a fishing vessel that was operating near Gaaf Alif atoll Vilingili at the time of incident.
MNDF confirms the incident was reported around 08:30hrs on Sunday morning when the fishing vessel was 11 miles outbound of Vilingili.
Immediately after the incident was reported Vilingili sea ambulance was dispatched to the area. The medics had attended to the deco victim for instant treatment and was transported to Gaaf Alif Vilingili hospital around 10:30hrs for further treatment.
