Maldives Pres promises elderly citizen allowance increase

Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Tuesday promised to increase the government levied special allowances for citizens above 65 years of age.

Under the administration of president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom the special allowance was increased to MVR5,000 per month for any citizen above the age of 65 years.

While addressing the people of Meemu atoll Mulah president Yameen noted that the current government has fulfilled its promise with the provision of increased allowance for elderly citizens despite mounting state debts.

"Hopefully under our administration we will increase the allowance from MVR5,000 on every elderly citizen," president Yameen declared on Tuesday.

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen looking for his re-election, promised he will reveal the new allowance rate once campaign starts on official grounds.

President Yameen had also asserted his administration gives same importance towards elderly citizen much like youth and children.
