Opposition Pres candidate unfazed by assault attempt

Opposition coalition nominated presidential candidate for 2018 elections Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declares he is undeterred in his duties towards the Maldives public.

The Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) parliamentary group leader made the bold statement following an assault attempt on him on Tuesday afternoon.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the trip to the reclaimed suburb as part of his door-to-door campaign when he encountered the altercation.

The assault attempt was foiled by Solih's bodyguards and supporters before he was whisked away in a car. The two yet unidentified men were captured on video as they scuffled with the veteran lawmaker's bodyguards and supporters.

Unfazed by the attempt, Solih was later seen continuing his campaign. Police are yet to comment on the incident and it remains unclear if the two men have been taken into custody.

Opposition officials said the latest incident underscores the threats facing the opposition ahead of the presidential elections.

While strongly asserting that he was unfazed by the attempts to intimidate him, Solih declared he will not step back in his quest towards redeeming the country's political turmoil.

He also noted that the assault attempt on him is clear indication of president Abdulla Yameen's failure, as the latter is intimidated by the opposition's strong campaign movement.
