Opposition protests against electoral watchdog

Maldives' opposition alliance on Monday protested against the country's electoral watchdog calling for free and fair presidential elections.

Shortly after the protest began, police had forced protesters away from the Elections Commission building but unlike in recent times had not used force to break up the protest.

Protesters led by top opposition officials had called for the resignation of the elections chief Ahmed Shareef.

Opposition parties have accused the commission of being influenced by the government which they said threatens the possibility of free and fair polls in September.
