EC accepts pres Yameen's candidacy

Maldives Elections Commission (EC) on Friday confirmed incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's candidacy for upcoming presidential elections has been accepted.

The Maldives electoral watchdog via Twitter made the confirmation on Friday stating the incumbent president has been notified accordingly of his candidacy acceptance.

President Abdulla Yameen who is looking for re-election submitted his candidacy through ruling Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) deputy president Moosa Zameer on Thursday. The form was received by elections commission's president Ahmed Shareef.

So far only three individuals applied for presidential candidacy at the electoral watchdog ahead of the crunch presidential elections.

While the opposition coalition's presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his running-mate Faisal Naseem's candidacy were accepted by the commission, independent candidate Hussain Naseer's candidacy was rejected due to inconsistencies.
