Maldives Election Commission (EC) on Saturday confirmed they have received a total of 86,000 forms for re-registration prior to crunch presidential elections.
The Maldives electoral watchdog claims processing all the forms will require additional time, which has been confirmed by the commission's member Ahmed Akram.
Meanwhile complains have been mounting about re-registration process with claims that several voters have not been re-registered despite the forms have been submitted to EC.
Responding to the complaints Akram noted that individual forms directly submitted to the commission was immediately processed however bulks received from various campaign offices and election center sites require additional time for processing.
"We are accepting re-registration forms submitted to us directly as well as through political parties, and it requires time for processing. But we assure you all re-registration applications will be processed before due," Akram stressed.
The deadline for re-registration was initially set for 21:00hrs on Saturday evening. However, due to large numbers of re-registration forms submitted to the commission with several still expected, the Maldives electoral watchdog decided to stretch the deadline until midnight.
Voters are requested to re-register if they wish to caste vote outside of their designated constituencies.
