EC warns over attempts to 'rig' presidential elections

Elections Commission (EC) of Maldives on Saturday warned of taking individuals found in suspicion of attempting to rig results in the upcoming presidential elections.

The commission's president Ahmed Shareef denied allegations about entities attempting to change the elections outcome, while added that anyone attempting to mislead public about the electoral watchdog's polls procedures will also be tried at court.

During Saturday's proceedings to announce the candidacy chronology, EC president Shareef assured the commission will not act against any regulations. Shareef also stressed the commission will work diligently to ensure the crunch presidential election proceeds transparently and fairly.

While denying accusations made on the commission Shareef retaliated that the electoral watchdog had not misrepresented re-registration documents presented through political parties or even from elections re-registration center.

Shareef asserted that anyone found guilty of attempting to rig the elections or allege the commission of foul play will be tried at court.

The commission's president also noted that some individuals have attempted to misrepresent information on re-registration forms submitted, and assured the electoral watchdog was attempting to clear out any discrepancies.

Furthermore Shareef also warned local media over broadcasting or publishing content against election commission's conduct regarding the presidential polls.
