EC plans extending re-registering window for pilgrims

Elections Commission of Maldives on Friday decided to extend the re-registration process for Hajj pilgrims whose earlier presented re-registration applications may have been rejected due to insufficient information.

The Maldives electoral watchdog had rejected a total of 5,626 re-registration applications and demanded from them to re-register once again before August 29.

The news attracted concern from many as several pilgrims who are currently out of Maldives to attend the Muslim sacred ritual at Mecca, Saudi Arabia will not be returning in time for the re-registration.

The commission's member, Ahmed Akram notified Avas Online that EC was working with Islamic Ministry to identify if any of the rejected applicants are currently at Saudi Arabia attending pilgrimage.

Akram futher noted that a clear course of action on the commission's end will be realized after identifying the percentage of rejected applicants are also pilgrims.

While the last batch of pilgrims are expected to reach Maldives in September 12, the electoral framework mandates the commission to announce the final voters list before the date.
