Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Monday urged an independent investigation after the country's electoral watchdog admitted that information regarding voters details for the upcoming presidential elections had been leaked to ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Speaking during a press conference on Monday, opposition alliance presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's campaign spokesperson Mariya Ahmed Didi slammed the Elections Commission's decision to conduct an internal investigation into the suspected leak which it insists had not originated inside the commission.
The North-Machchangoalhi lawmaker refused to accept the commission's statement insisting that the people could not be satisfied with an internal investigation.
"The investigation must be conducted by the police," Mariya said.
