Police have arrested 18 people over clashes between government and opposition supporters in Gaaf Alif Atoll Kolamaafushi island on Wednesday.
Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) clashed with opposition supporters on Wednesday while party camps on both sides were vandalized.
PPM alleged that opposition supporters had attacked its camps in two other islands and condemned the violence which it said was an attempt to influence the outcome of the upcoming presidential elections on September 23.
Police had deployed more officers to Kolamaafushi and said an investigation into the incident was underway.
