EC claims no evidence of 'data leak' to ruling party

Elections Commission on Thursday confirmed they found no evidence relating to possible data leak of voters list details to ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

According to the commission their complains bureau's investigation over the issue notified by Mohamed Gasam, a senior member of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) concluded showing no indication that there was any data leak.

Gasam notified the commission stating several eligible voters who re-registered to cast vote at Sri Lanka were contacted by someone identifying they were from PPM's campaign office inquiring about the voter's decision for re-registration.

EC explained that Gasam's complaint regarding multiple calls to him from individuals claiming to be from PPM office, have phone numbers registered to an individual named Abdulla Rasheed.

The complains bureau further insisted in their conclusion they did not find any substantial evidence of PPM office contacting Gasam or the commission itself sharing any voting information with the ruling party office.

However, during a previous press conference the electoral watchdog's president Ahmed Shareef noted claimed he suspected voters detail have been compromised and leaked to ruling party office.

Shareef further confirmed the commission acknowledged that elections data have been leaked to the ruling party's campaign office. He also claimed being notified of several calls made to individuals regarding their re-registration decisions, from PPM's party office.
