Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Wednesday has congratulated the national football team for advancing to the finals of SAFF Suzuki Cup after beating Nepal.
The national football team is the first finalist of the SAFF Suzuki Championship, currently proceeding at Bangladesh.
Maldives will be going on the pitch against neighboring India in the final match. Interestingly, the final game may be subject to some level of heavy media attention and possible talking points towards the current flailing diplomatic ties between the two nations amidst the island nation government's decision to lean close to Beijing instead of New Delhi.
Maldives managed a 3-0 win against Nepal under tough weather conditions.
While president has congratulated the national football team for their achievement in this year's tournament, the island nation's head of state had met with the entire squad earlier at Dharubaaruge to encourage them ahead of the tournament.
SAFF Suzuki Cup final is scheduled for September 15, Saturday.
