Maldives EC assures polls coverage for international media

Maldives electoral watchdog on Thursday claimed the commission has not restricted international media from covering the crunch presidential elections scheduled for September 23.

Elections Commisison (EC) of Maldives have responded to earlier statements of opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who had suspected the commission was restricting foreign media from covering the polls.

According to Solih, they have received multiple complains from journalists and reporters alike that they have been barred from gaining proper access into the Maldives presidential election.

EC on Thursday denied the opposition's accusation ensuring the commission has not restricted any foreign media from covering the elections event. The commission also added that they will adhere and respect to the local Constitution and stressed they invite international media to observe the presidential elections.

Meanwhile Maldives government has mandated foreign journalists and reporters to enter the island nation under business visa if they wish to cover the elections.
