Opposition pres candidate pledges press freedom 'once again'

Opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday has pledged to once again enforce press and media freedom in Maldives.

Solih's pledge comes as a direct response to international association RSF that had demanded both Solih and ruling party presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen, must answer on the loss of press freedom in Maldives.

RSF has demanded accountability from both presidential candidates about the repeal anti-defamation act as well as criminally charging anyone intervening press freedom. In addition to this, the international association had urged reviving investigations on the missing Minivan News journalist Ahmed Rilwan and slain blogger Yameen Rasheed.

"I pledge to open investigations into journalist Ahmed Rilwan’s disappearance, Yameen Rasheed’s murder, repeal the anti defamation act and ensure press freedom," Solih retweeted RSF Asia Pacific's tweet making the demands.

Even earlier, Solih had stressed he will ensure a safe environment for local reporters and journalists to proceed with their work and investigations.
