Opposition celebrate on streets, in rain after Solih's win

After opposition alliance candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's historic win at the 2018 presidential elections supporters have taken to the streets of Maldives capital to celebrate the victory; even under pouring rain.

The 2018 presidential election was contested between the now declared winner Solih and his ruling party counterpart Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom; who was seeking re-election.

Opposition alliance candidate has already secured himself a comfortable win of 129,025 votes while Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Abdulla Yameen lags behind with more than 35,000 votes "as he lost most of his key electorates to the opposition that he had hoped would help him secure a second term in office."

While the final results have yet to be announced it is already guaranteed that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has in fact won the presidential polls.

Supporters from all over town gathered in front of the opposition party's camp in front of artificial beach on east end of Male' City to celebrate and express their joy.

Many of the opposition supporters were seeing chanting victory slogans; while all wore yellow threads or held the prime opposition party's flags.

The constant rain did not seem to deter the opposition supporters from holding their celebrations on the middle of the road.
