Self-exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday insisted that Maldives' outgoing president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was not part of the discussions with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud during his recent visit to the Kingdom.
After ending his two day visit to Saudi on Wednesday, Nasheed on Twitter said the Saudi King had assured that the kingdom would always seek to work with the government in power.
"President Yameen was not part of the discussion," Nasheed said refuting rumours that the Saudi King had sought assurances that president Yameen would not be arrested.
Nasheed lives in self imposed exile most recently in Sri Lanka after he was allowed to leave to the UK on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal following his jailing on terrorism charges.
He was sentenced to 13 years in prison over the arbitrary arrest and subsequent detention of a sitting judge while he was president.
Nasheed has been critical of the incumbent government over its close ties with Saudi and China. He had also accused the Saudi government of dictating Maldives' foreign policy.
Nasheed meanwhile is set to return from exile on November 1 following the opposition alliance's resounding victory in last month's presidential elections.
His party had announced plans for celebrations throughout the Maldives to welcome Nasheed back to the country.
