JP to re-elect Gasim as party leader

Opposition Jumhoory Party (JP) has scheduled a council sit-down for later Sunday to re-elect business tycoon Gasim Ibrahim as the party leader.

Gasim had relinquished his leader's post ahead of the party's congress in June.

The business tycoon who lived in self imposed exile in Germany after he was convicted of bribery and sentenced to over three years in prison in August last year had been forced to relinquish his post due to his criminal conviction.

However, Gasim had returned to the Maldives earlier this month after he was granted bail by the High Court before his bribery conviction was overturned on Monday.

JP had sought interested party members for the vacated post on Monday. But only Gasim had expressed interest for the post.

The party said the council will convene at 4pm on Sunday before Gasim's name would be put to a vote as per its charter.
