Coalition parties must agree to secure parliament majority, says Nasheed

The political parties in the opposition alliance must reach an agreement that can enable the coalition to secure parliament majority in next year's parliamentary elections, former president Mohamed Nasheed said Tuesday.

Speaking during a meeting with coalition partner and religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) on Tuesday, Nasheed insisted that the parties must reach an agreement on the elections as soon as possible.

"Securing parliament majority is vital. The parties must reach an agreement that can enable us to do so. I urge the parties to discuss this with the party leadership and reach a mutual agreement soon," Nasheed who returned to the country after three years in self-exile last week urged.

The coalition had agreed to work together in the parliamentary elections after securing a stunning victory in September's presidential elections.

However, there have been reports of a major rift after it was announced that the recently reinstated 12 lawmakers would be gifted party tickets without a primary shortly after the former government MPs met with Nasheed.

The announcement has been met with intense criticism especially on social networking sites saying that the decision to "gift" party tickets was against democratic principles.
