Senior diplomat accused of sexually harassing staff

Allegations have surfaced that a senior diplomat had sexually harassed a foreign ministry a female staff with many across social networking sites calling on the relevant authorities to investigate.

According to the social media reports, the unidentified diplomat had sexually harassed a female staff during an official trip abroad in April this year.

Some staff have claimed that the foreign ministry had failed to properly investigate the incident.

The incident had been reported to the internal committee at the ministry but it had been "swept under the rug" citing lack of evidence, the staff said.

Several senior ministry officials have echoed calls that the victim must be protected and the perpetrator be brought to justice.

"Immediate investigation is necessary to establish the veracity of the claims. The victims should be protected & perpetrators brought to justice. Our society should move beyond sweeping such serious issues under the carpet!", former foreign ministry Dhunya Maumoon Tweeted.

"Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, & what constitutes Consent is all misconstrued in Maldivian institutions in favor of predators. As a non-decision making senior diplomat my responsibility, first and foremost is to an alleged victim. For them, anything I can do, I will. Always," Maldives' deputy permanent representative to Geneva Jeffrey Salim Waheed said.
