Maldives clamps down on firms employing undocumented expats

Maldives' labour relations authority (LRA) has launched a clamp down on undocumented expatriate workers in under construction resorts.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday, LRA spokesperson Ali Shareef said one resort currently under construction has employed around 1,000 undocumented expatriate workers.

Shareef said the LRA has now launched an investigation to find out who was responsible for bringing in the expats.

Shareef also revealed that LRA had inspected 318 companies including 30 resorts over reports that undocumented expatriates were being employed.

According to Shareef, the resort had attempted to deceive authorities and added that LRA would take action accordingly.

The last census numbered expatriate workers at 124,000 with an additional 150,000 reportedly undocumented.
