Prof. Ugail shares lie detection tech with pres commission

Professor Hassan Ugail has announced on Thursday that the lie detection technology developed by the professor and his team will be extended to the Commission Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances to assist with their investigation.

In a Tweet, the renowned Maldivian scholar said the commission will also be granted access to the state of art face and gait recognition technologies, also developed by the professor.

Professor Hassan Ugail is a mathematician and a computer scientist currently working as a Professor of Visual Computing at the School of Engineering and Informatics; the University of Bradford. Professor Ugail is the first Maldivian to obtain a PhD in Mathematics and the first and to date the only Maldivian to receive a professorship in the field of Science. The Professor's principal research interests are in the area of Visual Computing.

Professor Ugail unveiled his lie detector system in 2011, which uses two cameras and a computer to identify and observe slight changes in facial expression and facial temperature profile. It is a major step-up from the traditional polygraph lie detector as it does not require to be hooked up to any sensors. The new system may also be used covertly.

Professor Ugail recently created his face recognition system for the UK police, which would assist them in finding lost persons and criminal suspects.

The Commission investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances are set to investigate 25 different cases, including the high profile murder of lawmaker, Afrasheem Ali and the disappearance of journalist, Ahmed Rilwan.
