High Court has granted a period of ten days to jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor for the arrangement of a lawyer to represent him in the appeal of his conviction for the explosion aboard the presidential speedboad, 'Finifenmaa'
Adeeb was sentenced to 15 years in jail following the conviction.
The appeal case was filed by Adeeb during June 2016, however, the case was accepted by the High Court during November of the same year. The first hearing of the case was held on Wednesday, two years after the case was filed.
A hearing will be scheduled after a lawyer has been arranged, and in the case that a lawyer has not been assigned, Adeeb will have to answer for himself in court, said the head judge at the initial hearing.
Adeeb was tried under the Terrorism Act, and received a 15 year sentence when the terror charges against him were proven in court. Two body guards of Adeeb were also charged with terrorism for assisting in the installation of the devices aboard the Finifenmaa Launch.
A police-man who prepared two IEDs on Adeeb's order gave his statement in court.
Adeeb has also received an eight year jail sentence for orchestrating the biggest corruption scandal in the country's history, the MMPRC graft. He was handed an additional ten years in jail for the possession of fire-arms. Several cases involving Adeeb are still pending at the Criminal Court.
