Opposition pushes for JP alliance

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples' National Congress (PNC) coalition have stated that the time has come to form an alliance between the Progressive Coalition and Jumhooree Party.

The opposition coalition, backed by former presidet Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, stated that the only other patriotic political leader loyal to the country beside Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is leader of Jumhooree Party and Speaker of the Parliament, Gasim Ibrahim. Gasim would not condone unconstitutional actions and will leave the coalition to join arms with the opposition, said leader of PNC, Abdul Raheem Abdulla,

The opposition's statement comes following the arrest of former president of Maldives and leader of PPM, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom on Monday afternoon on charges of money-laundering.

"I hope Gasim Ibrahim does not stand idly witnessing the current happenings. The moment has come for him to stand up for this country. I urge leader of JP Gasim Ibrahim to leave the [ruling coalition] government and join hands with us to reform the country", said Abdul Raheem.
