Threat of a coup if MDP majority is not attained, warns ex-pres

The opposition will attempt a coup d'état if main ruling Maldivian democratic Party (MDP) and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in unable to attain parliament majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections, says former president and leader of MDP Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking at a campaign event, Nasheed said once government majority is lost, the citizens of the country will again have to witness the same unrest and conflicts the country experienced not too long ago.

"If MDP and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih lose parliament majority in the upcoming parliamentary election, the Maldivian people will again have to witness a very dire scene. Our horizon will once again get clouded with a coup, and unrest will follow", warned Nasheed.

Downplaying the importance of an opposition, Nasheed went on to say he does not understand why members from other political parties wish to become members of the parliament, and stressed that Agenda 19 is the reason why MDP members are contesting for the parliament.

Agenda 19 is a 19-bill framework compiled by MDP, and is their slogan for the parliamentary elections slated for April.
